If you want to try it out, there will be an open beta available to all PS4 owners from February 22 - March 3, but characters made in this beta will be wiped at the conclusion. According to Yoshida, remote play is the feature he's most proud of in the PS4 version.įFXIV is coming to the PlayStation 4 on April 14, 2014.

But things like crafting on the go make perfect sense and it's fantastic to see the full MMO with no restrictions running on the Vita. player since it's a bit less responsive than using a controller and simply harder to see everything when it's all scrunched on a tiny screen. I wouldn't recommend doing anything too intense with remote play, like a long dungeon or player vs. FF14: ARR using remote play doesn't look as vibrant as it does on PS4, but nevertheless the graphics on the OLED screen are splendid. The touch pad is also used to zoom the camera in and out. There is a customized, dedicated UI for remote play, and using the back touch pad you can make your skill and chat panels larger. With this functionality, as long as your game is on and you're connected to the Internet, you can seamlessly play the gorgeous MMO from anywhere (even if that just means your couch). The most remarkable feature coming with the PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is remote play with the PS Vita. It's definitely not speedy to communicate using the integrated mouse and keyboard UI, but they're good for quick messages and luckily you can plug in your own peripherals if you'd like to chat. Along with a mouse, the PS4 version also has a fully implemented keyboard UI. The responsiveness is impressive, and makes it easy to hover over skills to see what they do.
Aside from the Hotbar, one new controller functionality that I found handy was the ability to simply use the Touchpad as a mouse.
The Cross Hotbar from the PlayStation 3 version that lets you press the L2 and R2 buttons then a button on the D-Pad or face button to execute an ability has been updated for the PS4 version to be more customizable, and it's a breeze to change skills around. But from what I played, every animation was very smooth and there wasn't any lag.Ĭoming from playing A Realm Reborn exclusively on PC, I was a bit worried about testing out the PlayStation 4 controls, but they're intuitive enough that by the end of my demo it was a cinch to control my character with a DualShock 4. Usually you'll be running at a minimum of 30 FPS. If you're in an area with hundreds of people fighting a huge boss like Odin, your FPS could dip under 30. As for framerates, director/producer Naoki Yoshida explained that the PS4 version of A Realm Reborn will run at a maximum of 60 FPS, but it isn't fixed there due to the nature of the MMO. Not to mention it's simply nicer being able to drink in extra graphical goodness. Considering many encounters show visual indicators on the ground, having a longer draw distance so you can see what's going on easier will be especially useful for PS4 players. Armor, weapon, and character models are much more detailed, and you can even zoom the camera back farther in the PS4 version to show off more of the glorious landscapes.

A high-end PC will still showcase the game to the fullest, but nevertheless the high-definition graphics sing in full 1080p, and more of the characters are able to appear on screen than in the PS3 build. FF14: ARR has been fully optimized for the PlayStation 4, and seeing it in action, there is a marked visual improvement over the PlayStation 3 version.
